Beatrice Ann Shields Guinan, daughter of Frederick and Mary (Polly) Shields passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2011. She is survived by three of her four children, Mark, Kerry and Sean, as well as her sister, Helen Doane and nine grandchildren. Her son Matthew, predeceased her in 1978. Beatrice was born in Freehold and attended St. Rose of Lima Elementary School and Freehold High School before enrolling in Trenton State Teacher's College (State College of New Jersey). After graduating, she taught second grade at Fort Monmouth for several years before enrolling in the executive training program at R.H. Macy's, advancing to the position of personnel director before retiring to raise her children. That career caused a move to the Midwest, where she resided in Wisconsin and Ohio for several years before returning to the East Coast in Fairfield, Conn. Her second retirement was to Clearwater, Fla., where she resided for 20 years, recently moving to St. Charles, Ill. to be near her children.
A private family ceremony will be held for her in Mequon, Wisconsin, where she will be reunited with her beloved first son, Matthew. Family members and friends will also be gathering to celebrate Mass together at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23 at St. Rose of Lima, Freehold. Afterwards, they will gather at her childhood home in Freehold to remember the stunning, smart red-head who loved her children, grandchildren, crosswords and the Atlantic Ocean. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
