The Honorable Patrick J. McGann Jr.
AGE: 84 • Little Silver
The Honorable Patrick J McGann, Jr., J.S.C., 84, of Little Silver, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at home. Judge McGann was born in Teaneck. He moved to Monmouth Beach in 1970 and then to Little Silver in 2000. Judge McGann served as a Petty Officer 3C with the United States Navy during World War II. He then served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City, Fordham University and Fordham Law School. In 1955, he began practicing law at his office on Linden Place, Red Bank. In 1957, he joined the firm of Applegate, Reussille, Cornwell, and Hartman. He later became a partner in the law firm of Reussille, Cornwell, Mausner, Carotenuto & McGann. He was a member of the Monmouth County and New Jersey Bar Associations and the American Judicature Society. Judge McGann served as New Jersey Deputy Attorney General and was the Municipal Attorney for the Boroughs of Red Bank, Union Beach, Sea Bright and Keansburg. Judge McGann served as a member of the New Jersey State Assembly. He was appointed by Governor Richard Hughes in 1968 to the Monmouth County Superior Court. He served in the General Equity, Civil, Criminal and Chancery Divisions. He was the Presiding Judge of the Chancery Division until his retirement in 1997. He returned to serve the Court on a recall basis until 2007.
Judge McGann was a trustee and communicant of the Roman Catholic Church of the Precious Blood, Monmouth Beach. He was a past president and member of the Serra Club International, Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Society and a longtime retreatant and a board member at the Loyola House of Retreats in Morristown. He was a member and past president of Monmouth Beach Bath and Tennis Club and a member of Skytop Lodge in Skytop, Pa. He was an avid traveler and historian. "The Judge" was known as a tremendously fair and impartial jurist who had a deep appreciation and knowledge of the law. He loved God, his life, his family and his friends.
The Papal Order of St. Gregory was bestowed upon Judge McGann by Bishop John Smith in 2007. He was honored by Seton Hall Law School in 1998 with the St. Sir Thomas More award. Judge McGann was recognized as Man of the Year by the Holy Name Society, the National Conference of Christians and Jews and the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick, Jersey Shore.
He was predeceased by his first wife of 47 years, Bernadette Elaine (Tyndall) McGann; and by his second wife, Margaret. He is survived by his children, Patrick J. and his wife Deborah of Pt. Pleasant, Maura E. and her partner Kathy Davison of Shrewsbury, Michael E. and his wife Eileen of Little Silver, Deirdre M. Lavery and her husband Michael of Burke, VA and Meghan E. Clemente and her husband Dr. Joseph Clemente of Little Silver; his sister, Kathleen Barnarr of Albuquerque, NM; seven grandchildren, Michael, Bobby, Brendan, Joe, Shannon, Jenna, Patrick, Tyler, and Owen. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews; and his dedicated and loving caregiver, Joseph Asuman.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2012 at the John E Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2012 at the Church of the Precious Blood RC Church, Monmouth Beach. Interment to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Loyola House of Retreats, 161 James St., Morristown, NJ 07960.
