AGE: 74 • Neptune

Charles L. Smith, 74, of Neptune passed away Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012 at home. Charles was born in Fitkins Hospital in Neptune, NJ and raised on Borden Avenue in Asbury Park. He graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1956 with many achievements including Who's Who, Best Natured, Most Democratic. He excelled in sports by winning the state championship of the high jump in 1955. He served as Vice President of the track club and was considered the steadiest member of the starting lineup of the basketball team. He attended Albright College and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. He served active duty from 1960-1961 and was in the Army National Guard from 1961-1966. He was an investigator & compliance officer with the Federal Government and began working for the Department of Labor in 1975. In 1993, he was honored to serve President Bill Clinton as the Special Assistant to the deputy Secretary of Labor to the President. He retired from government life in 1996 to accept a position with Prudential Insurance as VP of Compliance. In 1970, he married his beloved wife, Muriel (Puff). He was an active member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity serving as Basilus in 1979. He was active with the Men's Club of Monmouth County. Charles was a longtime member of St. Augustine Church serving as Sr. Warden and spent many happy hours with the feeding program. He led his family with conviction and love. Charles shared it with his community, loved ones, and his extended family. All who knew him will dearly miss this outstanding human being.

He is predeceased by his mother, Gertrude Saunders; aunt, Lillian Sutton, and daughter, Stayce Harvey. Charles leaves behind his beloved wife, Puff Smith; 2 daughters, Romy McClure and Kecia (Bill) Ellison; grandchildren, Chantel (Richard) Harris, William Harvey, and Maya McClure; great grandchildren, Sanaa Harris, Karlise Harris, and Richard Harris; his brother, Thomas L. Smith; his sisters, Amy Ludlow, L. Marie Williams, Viola Smith, Cicely Saunders, Patricia Roberts, and Sharon Saunders and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Funeral Services will be Friday, October 5 at 12Noon from St. Augustine Church, Corner of Atlantic and Prospect Ave in Asbury Park. Visitation will be at 11am from the church. Interment will be Private. Jackson Funeral Home in Neptune has been in charge of arrangements.
