Richard John Knopf, 84, of Harvey Cedars, NJ, formerly of Toms River, NJ and Mountainside, NJ passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 in Arden Courts of Allentown, PA. He was the husband of Anna (Hake) Knopf with whom he celebrated 61 years of marriage on November 18, 2011. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, he was the son of the late Matthew and Mildred (Lutz) Knopf. After graduation from high school, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. After returning from the service, Richard received a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Newark College of Engineering. He retired in 1986 as Senior electrical engineer from Exxon Mobil after 28 years of dedicated service including extended international assignments to lead electrical startup at many of the company's refineries and petrochemical facilities around the world. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a 32nd Degree Mason. An avid boater, he loved the NJ shore and actively participated in the design and renovation of their home in Harvey Cedars, a place of many fond family memories. A friendly soul, he enjoyed his daily walks and would often be seen engaging people on his route, a route that included his Irish Setter pal, Greta, in the late 1980's. A beloved husband and father, he will be truly missed.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Richard G. Knopf and his wife Valerie of Califon, NJ, Jeffrey A. Knopf and his wife Laura of Allentown; grandchildren, Jeffrey Jr., Allison, Lucas and Lindsey.
Services are private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Interment is private. Arrangements by J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, Allentown.
