Wesley Dale "Babe" Bissey, 100, passed away Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, in Ft. Myers, Fla. He was born July 17, 1912 at the Richmond Hotel owned by his parents, Joseph and Louise Bissey, Pt. Pleasant Beach. As a young boy, he enjoyed many hours of boating and fishing on the Manasquan River. He attended the Pt. Pleasant Beach school system and was a member of the track and basketball teams while in high school. Wesley graduated in 1930 from high school and went to work for the U.S. Postal Service, Point Pleasant Beach in 1931. He retired in 1970 as assistant postmaster.
Wesley joined Ocean Fire Company #1 at age 24 and held many offices and was Chief of the Point Pleasant Beach Fire Companies in 1951. He attained Life Membership of OFC #1 and is a life member of the New Jersey State Fire Chief Association. He was a member of the Durand Lodge #179, Masonic Temple and was active in Local Cub Scout and Boy Scout organizations. After retiring, Wesley and his wife, Edwina (nee Brooks) enjoyed many trips throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. They also were very active in Square and Round Dancing. He was a Round Dancer Caller and called dances at many conventions in Atlantic City, Philadelphia and Florida for 25 years. In 1982, Wesley and Edwina moved permenately to Ft. Myers.
He was predeceased by his wife, Edwina; and his brother, Charles. Wesley is survived by two sons, Robert D. (Jessie) of Brick, and Larry B. (Carolyn) of Pt. Pleasant; 6 grandchildren, Robert Jr. (Janice), York, PA, Jeffrey, Toms River, Jane Jensen (Adrian), Brick, Linda Small, Port Orange, Fla., Robin Rudd (Randy), Neptune City, Brian (Adrianna), Sunrise, Fla.; 12 great- grandchildren, Sarah Clancy (Patrick), Jeffrey Jr., Ellyn Bissey, Natalie Bissey, Grace Bissey, Heather Jensen, Kristen Jensen, Christopher Small, Taylor Rudd, Lauren Rudd, Chase Byers, and Sydney Byers; two nieces, Judith Troia, New City, NY and Vicki Messeroll, Southwest Ranches, Fla.
A memorial gathering will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23 at the Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, 812 Arnold Ave., Pt. Pleasant Beach. Which will include services by the Durand Masonic Lodge and Ocean Fire Company #1. A memorial service will be held 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory would be appreciate to Ocean Fire Company #1, Box 1765, Pt. Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742.
