Clarence Lurch, 92 years young, crossed his final finish line Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012. Born in Trenton, Clarence grew up in Neptune moving to Wall Twp in 1953, where he would remain for the rest of his life.
He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Lois Lungren Lurch, in 2001. He was also predeceased by his brother, Frank, and his four sisters, Evelyn, Dorothy, Betty and Eleanor. He is survived by his brother, Joseph of Naples, Florida. He is also survived by his six children, Lois Miller (Wall Twp), Frank (Avon by the Sea), Deborah Fritz and her husband Alex (Brick Twp), Donald and his wife Nancy (Wall Twp), Joseph and his wife Jackie (Wall Twp), and Douglas and his wife Jeanne (Wall Twp). He had twenty-two grandchildren, including his two constant companions who cared for their Pop Pop until the very end: Amy Miller Ciccone (Wall Twp) and Mickey Harned (Jackson Twp), five great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his prize possession, his 1945 Jeep.
Clarence founded Lertch Wrecking Company in the 1950's and despite his 'retirement' remained THE BOSS until his passing. A WWII Navy SeaBee Veteran, Clarence was a legend around the Jersey Shore and entertained friends, family, and even strangers with his story telling. He was also an exempt fireman in Bradley Beach. A member of the Jersey Shore Running Club, he participated in many local races including the Bradley Beach 5k which made a special award in Clarence's name for the first 80 plus finisher. Clarence was also an annual participant in the Belmar St Patrick's Day parade where he towed the Jersey Shore Running Club float with his beloved jeep. Clarence will be remembered by everyone who met him and missed by all that loved him.
Donations to Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children, Shands House, 1600 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803 in Clarence's name would be greatly appreciated. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, 2652 Hwy. 138, Wall, NJ 07719. A private memorial service will take place at a later date.
