Frederic L. Blum

AGE: 90 • Somerset

Frederic L. Blum died Feb. 22, 2013 at Somerset Medical Center. He was born in Newark and was a resident of Cranford for over 50 years before moving to Hillsborough and finally Somerset. He was a lifelong resident of New Jersey. Frederic graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood. He received a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1943 and an MS from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1966.

He was a licensed Professional Engineer. He was a structural engineer, specializing in the design of heavy industrial structures. He was with Research Cottrell for eighteen years. He had his own engineering practice for ten years. He also developed and marketed two computer programs for structural design of steel beams and columns. Frederic was a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He served on two national committees and authored twenty-two professional papers and articles. Mr. Blum was a congregant of Temple Beth of Cranford. He served as Financial Secretary and was a member of the Board of Trustees of Temple Beth El. He was also a member of B'nai B'rith and an auxiliary member of Hadassah. He belonged to the Amateur Computer Group of New Jersey and the Jewish Genealogical Society of North Jersey. He was a US Navy veteran and served on an ammunition ship and a patrol craft during World War II.

He is predeceased by his sister, Corinne LeBovit, brother, Jerome Blum, and son-in-law, Jeff Weinstein. He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, the former Muriel Rubenstein, and two daughters and a son-in-law, Ruth and Rich Corson of Hillsborough and Karen Weinstein of Edison. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Leah and her husband, Devin, Rachel and her husband Johnny, Seth and his wife Holly, Sarah and her husband Steve, and Ari. In addition he is survived by 3 great-grandchildren, Zevi, Amira, and Noah. Funeral services will be held at Goldstein Funeral Chapel in Edison on Feb. 24 at 1 PM. Burial will be at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge. Shiva will be at the Weinstein residence.
