John "Jack" R. Guthrie Sr., 82 of Hightstown died Wednesday February 27th at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County, Willingboro, NJ. Born in Dubois, Pa, Mr. Guthrie grew up in Punxsutawney, PA and lived in New Brunswick, NJ before moving to Hightstown in 1970.
He received his Bachelors degree from Gannon College and his Masters degree from Montclair State. Mr. Guthrie was employed for 30 years at the South Brunswick High School as a social studies teacher and eventual Department Chair, retiring in 1993. Previously he taught at Clark High School form 1958-1963. He was a veteran of the US Army, attaining the rank of Corporal. He was a member of the NJEA, past president of the S. Brunswick Education Assn. and a former member of the American Legion, New Brunswick. He loved the NY Jets and Yankees and was proud of being Irish.
He is predeceased by his brothers William and James. Surviving are his wife of 44 years Jan Route Guthrie, his children who he adored, son John R. Guthrie Jr. and his wife Christine of Hillsborough, NJ and his daughter Dr. Pamela Marie Guthrie of Brooklyn, NY, his grandchildren John R. Guthrie III and Alyssa Nicole Guthrie, his sisters-in-law Barbara J. Route and Helenanne Route and several nieces and nephews. Services will begin at 9:15 a.m. Monday March 4th at the Lester Memorial Home 16 W. Church St., Jamesburg followed by a 10 a.m. funeral liturgy at St. Anthony of Padua RC Church, Hightstown. Burial will be in Holy Cross Burial Park, S. Brunswick. Visiting hours for family and friends will be Sunday March 3rd form 2-6 p.m. and Monday from 8:15-9:15 a.m. at the funeral home.
