Thomas Joseph Murray Jr., 77, of Avon-by-the-Sea, died Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y, Tom resided in Parlin, NJ before moving to Avon 25 years ago. Tom served with the U.S. Marine Corps as a Sergeant from 1954-1962. An electrician by trade, he worked with Local Union 3 of the IBEW, retiring in 1996 after 20 years of service. He also worked for the Brooklyn Navy Yard and The New York Telephone Company. A communicant of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Avon, he was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. An avid boater, Tom also enjoyed reading and travelling with his wife.
He was predeceased by his sister, Joan Lawrence, in 2006. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patricia O'Brien Murray; and his sons, Thomas Murray, Shark River Hills, and Brian Murray, Wyndham, N.Y.; and his daughter and her husband, Meghan and John Nance, Bloomfield. Tom was the loving grandfather of Oona and Emmett Nance. He is also survived by his sister, Maureen McNaughton, Beth Page, N.Y., and several nieces, a nephew, and many cousins.
Family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 20 at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 21 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Asbury Park. Interment will follow in St. Anne Cemetery, Allenwood.
