Joseph "Joe" Osgood, 92, of Tinton Falls, a half-century resident of West Long Branch, died Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center, Long Branch. His beloved wife, Margaret "Maggie" Leach Osgood, died in 2008. A Brookline, Massachusetts native, Joe was graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a chemical engineer. Wearing his graduation gown over his military uniform, he received his ROTC commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps the same day. He served with distinction as a radar officer in the Pacific Theater during World War II, then went on to a lifelong career at Fort Monmouth, first as a radar technical writer and editor and for 36 years as head of a Requirements and Standards organization within the Army Signal Corps. Joe served in the U.S Air Force Active Reserve and the U.S. Army Signal Corps Reserve for a total of 34 years, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. The Association of the U.S. Army issued him an award as a distinguished graduate. Skiing was Joe's lifelong passion. He took to parallel skiing with the elegant control that kept his skis tightly touching. He belonged to four ski clubs: Monmouth Ski Club, of which he was a past president; Skinanigans; West Long Branch Community Center Ski Club, and the 70+ (cq) Ski Club whose 80+ pin he proudly wore. He was a member of the Fort Monmouth Officers Club and the Long Branch Ice Boat and Yacht Club. He exercised in later years with the Gung Ho Guys at the Long Branch Senior Citizens Center. Joe and Maggie skied from New York State, New England and Canada to Idaho and Europe, including Spain. They spent retirement winters in Reno, Nevada, skiing Mt. Rose and the North Lake Tahoe region of California. They summered socializing with fellow boaters aboard their sailboat docked at Barnacle Bill's marina, Rumson.
Joe was predeceased by his sister, Marie Polisner. He is survived by his sister-in-law and her husband, Joyce and Harry Tober of Long Branch; nephews, Jeffrey Polisner of Lafayette, California, Dennis Polisner of Chicago; niece, Suzy Eastman of Los Angeles, and many other loving relatives.
