AGE: 101 • Brick

Thomas A. Campbell, 101, of Brick, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick. Mr. Campbell was born June 21, 1911 in the Bronx, he moved to Staten Island in 1920. He was a 1929 graduate of Curtis High School on Staten Island and worked on Wall Street in NYC for a brief time. He was appointed to the NYC Police Department in 1936 and was transferred to the New York City Fire Department in 1937. Tom worked for Engine Company 164, Ladder #84 and retired from the fire department in 1960 and in 2012 he was declared the oldest living retired NYFD fireman. He then went to worked for Aetna Casualty Insurance as a building inspector from 1960-1974. In 1982, he moved from Staten Island to Brick to enjoy his retirement. Tom played many years in semi-pro baseball. He managed various baseball teams on Staten Island and was co-founder of the First Little League on Staten Island. He later switched his attention to golf. Tom was a great golfer with a tremendous respect for the game and even earned a National Championship at the Senior Olympics in Baton Rouge, LA in July 2001. He was a longtime member of Woodlake Country Club in Lakewood.

He was predeceased in 2004 by his loving wife, Helen; and by his youngest son, Robert in 2008. Surviving is his son, Dr. Bruce Campbell and his wife Judy of Wesley-Chapel, FL; daughter, Barbara Reilly and her husband Robert of Brick; daughter-in-law, Diane Campbell of Brick; 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visiting will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 28 at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. The service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 29 in the funeral home.
