Bert Weisman, 96, passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at home, surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Long Branch, he spent his life there until moving to Highlands 8 years ago. An Army veteran, he served in Europe during World War II as an Intelligence Observer. After his discharge, he joined his father at WEISMAN's Variety Store on Ocean Ave., Sea Bright, where he continued with his brother, Frank for 55 years. After retiring, he worked at FoodTown, West End.
He was predeceased by a son, Jay Weisman in 1986; by his sisters, Molly Fidel and Jean Beja; and by his brother, Frank. Surviving are his devoted wife of 66 years, Berta Solomon Weisman; son, Howard and wife Terri, Jefferson, Ohio; daughter, Ann Weisman Cohen, Manhattan, NY. Bert "Poppy" is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, his sister, Rhea Marcus, East Brunswick and his daughter-in-law, Hilda Liebeskind.
A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Monmouth Fields Cemetery, West Long Branch. The family will be sitting Shiva at 1 Scenic Drive, Highlands on Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. The Flock Funeral Home, Long Branch, is in charge of arrangements.
