Elizabeth Joy Daubenberger
Elizabeth Joy Daubenberger, (nee Steinle), of Saddle River & Baywood, NJ, and Killington, VT, passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, surrounded by her children. "Joy", as she was always known, was born August 20, 1929, in Jersey City, NJ, to Elizabeth (née Davies of Shropshire, England) and Carl Oscar Steinle. Joy was a child model with the William Morris Endeavor Agency in NYC, and enjoyed many national campaigns, including recognition for a full-page photo featured in the "Saturday Evening Post". Joy had only one sibling, the brother she adored, Carl Davies Steinle, who died in WW II, when Joy was just a child. Joy became a published author at the age of 15, with a poem she wrote honoring his memory. Joy graduated Dickinson High School in Jersey City, where she was voted Most Popular, and was involved in many activities. Her family moved to Waldwick, NJ, following her HS Graduation.
Joy graduated Seton Hall University, and was employed as a teacher of English, reading, physical education, and special education for many years in the B.O.C.E.S. system, among others, in Rockland County, NY. She achieved her Master's degree and post-Master's certifications at Jersey City State College, and pursued Doctoral studies there. Joy was a Learning Consultant and Director of Special Services for the remainder of her long career in northern NJ, specifically, Waldwick, Old Tappan, Hamburg, Little Ferry, West Caldwell, and Prospect Park. She also served as an Interim Director for many local districts. Upon retirement, Joy founded her own Child Advocacy Consulting Firm, and continued to advocate for the services and the education of children. She was a staunch supporter of the rights of the disabled. Joy was an avid and accomplished skier and a member of Garden State Ski Club for over 50 years, where she held various offices and positions. She ski raced for GSSC and the New Jersey Ski Council, winning many races and titles. Joy was renowned for ski racing as a septuagenarian, and won three trips to compete nationally with NASTAR out West. She was a member of the Amateur Ski Instructors Association, the Metedeconk River Yacht Club, and multiple professional organizations. Joy was a parishioner of St. Bartholomew's Church for over 65 years. Her greatest love, however, was the water, and she will be fondly remembered for all the terrific times down the shore, on the boat and at the beach. Joy was married for 39 years to Richard Louis Daubenberger, who predeceased her. She helped her husband to launch and develop B & D Construction Co. She continued to own and manage multiple rental properties in Ocean County, NJ.
Joy is survived by her son, Richard Carl Daubenberger, Esq., his wife, Dina, and their daughters, Taylor Josephine and Jordan Devon, of Glen Mills, PA and Naples, FL; her daughter, Bonnie Elizabeth, her husband, Reto, and their children, Tucker Davies and Trista Elizabeth, of Upper Saddle River; as well as two nieces and two nephews, Robert Daubenberger, of Elmwood Park; Nancy Foelsch of Ramsey; Karen Quade of Boonton Township; and Raymond Daubenberger, Jr. of Haymarket, VA, and their respective families, and also many cherished cousins in the Littleton and Boxboro areas of Massachusetts. Joy will be remembered as a beloved, generous, and doting Grandma.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, May 17th, 2013, from 9-10:30am at St. Bartholomew's Church, 70 Sheridan Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ. The funeral service will be offered thereafter.
