Frederick "Fred" Haelig, 74, died at home with his family at his side on Thursday, June 27, 2013, after fighting a valiant battle against pancreatic cancer. Born in Plainfield on November 1, 1938, and raised in Bound Brook, Fred lived the past 45 years as a resident of Bridgewater. He graduated from Bound Brook High School in 1956, and from Bucknell University in 1960, with a degree in civil engineering. After college, Fred spent two years with the Army Corps of Engineers as a First Lieutenant on active duty in Okinawa and Thailand. Thereafter, he embarked on a nearly-fifty year career in the Central Jersey paving construction industry, working for several firms in the area, and recently concluded his career after his retirement from Halecon, Inc., of Bridgewater. Fred was a member of the Masons for over 50 years, and in 1991 was appointed Blood Drive Chairman for Raritan Valley Lodge 46, Somerville. For more than two decades, Fred ran monthly blood drives at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Bound Brook, and Somerset Medical Center, and was himself a dedicated blood donor, donating more than 37 gallons of whole blood, platelets and plasma over his lifetime. From 1983 to 1986, Fred was an active adult leader in Boy Scout Troop 46 of Martinsville, NJ. On November 19, 1990, Fred joined "A Friend of Bill W" and was faithful to the program's ideals until his passing. He enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, swimming and trips to Walt Disney World with his grandchildren, as well as visits to the Caribbean, following the New York Giants and Yankees, and time spent with his many friends in the Fellowship.
Fred is predeceased by his father, Robert K. Haelig, Sr., and his mother, Kathryn W. Haelig. He is survived by his brother, Robert K. Haelig, Jr., of Toms River, and his three children, Laura Denner of Westfield, Frederick W. (Rick) Haelig, Jr., of San Francisco CA, and Kathryn Haelig of Point Pleasant. He is also survived by his ex-wife and friend, Barbara Haelig of Manasquan; his two beloved grandchildren, Kayleigh and Brett Denner, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and his dog, Buddy.
In lieu of flowers, Fred has asked that memorial donations be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital and/or Compassionate Care Hospice, 9 Lamington Road, Suite A, Branchburg, NJ 08876. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 1, at Hagan-Chamberlain Funeral Home, 225 Mountain Ave., Bound Brook. Cremation will be private. Friends will be received at the funeral home Sunday, 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 P.M., with Masonic services at 7:30 P.M.
