AGE: 66 • Asbury Park

Roland Boone, 66, of Asbury Park, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Neptune Rehabilitation Center, Neptune, from the ravages of cancer. He was born on September 7, 1946 in the town of Jackson, Northampton County, NC to the late William and Louise Kee Boone.
Roland grew up on Staten Island, New York. He graduated from Port Richmond High School and attended Brookdale Community College, NJ. Roland served his country in the U. S. Navy for 4 years and was a combat Veteran of the Viet-Nam War. He worked at Ft. Monmouth, Eatontown NJ and retired after 37 years of distinguished service. He also served and retired as SFC in the Army National Guard with 17 years of service. Roland was honored on March 29, 2012 by President Barack Obama on Viet-Nam Veterans Day with a Proclamation for his dedicated continued service to a Grateful Nation. He was also awarded the National Defense Medal, National Service Medal and Viet-Nam Campaign Medals of Honor.
Roland was a life member of American Legion Post 266 Neptune, NJ, and served as a 4-Time Post Commander, Monmouth County Commander, Department Executive Committeeman, and Department of NJ Vice-Commander. Roland was a Member of VFW Post 2639 and an Associate of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Chapter 1. He was the Chairman of American Legion College in Sea Girt, NJ, and he also held the position of Vice President of Neptune Pop Warner Football Assn. for 10 years.
Roland was a father figure and mentor for over the past 40 years in Neptune and Asbury Park to countless children who graced his home. He dedicated his life to service and helping others. Roland was a gentleman, good friend, and he was a staple in our community who will surely be missed.
Roland is survived by his wife, Sharon of 43 years; 2 sons, Glenn and Darren of NJ; 3 daughters, Angele of Maryland, Michelle, Renee, and 1 daughter-in-law, Dawn all of NJ; 1 brother and 3 sisters; 15 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 7 nieces; 3 nephews; 5 great-nieces; 4 great-nephews; 3 sisters-in-law; his favorite Aunt, Nellie Kee of Staten Island, NY; special friends, Dolores, Ramon, Virginia, Joyce, George, and Butch; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visiting hours will be from 9 am Friday, July 12 until the time of the funeral at 11 am at James H. Hunt Funeral Home, 126 Ridge Ave., Asbury Park. A ritualistic service will be performed at 10 am by the American Legion Post 266 and VFW Post 2639 of Neptune. Interment will be in William C. Doyle Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to The Roland Boone Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 1243, Asbury Park, NJ 07712. .
