Mrs. Theresa (Terri) McGowan, born in South River, N.J., was a Florida resident for the past 36 years (the last 23 years as a resident of Boynton Beach). A graduate of South River High School, she attended Barnard College (NYC); Rutgers University; Inter-Americana Universidad Satillo, Mexico; and Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida. She was a life-long businesswoman, entrepreneur, adventurer and student. Her multi-faceted career included being the Owner/Manager of Cedar Manor on Farrington Lake (now Sir John's) in North Brunswick, N.J. and the founder of a number of successful businesses including: Terri's Shoppe and Vagabond Travel. When not directing her own businesses, she worked for the N.J. State Division of Employment Services; Times-Beacon Newspaper; The World of Palm Aire in Pompano Beach; Ocean Trail, Jupiter; and United Electronic Corporation in Pompano Beach. In 1969, after a near terminal bout with cancer at the mid-point of her life, Terri completed an extensive world tour of across Europe, Asia and the Pacific. Mrs. McGowan's fraternal organizations included Life Membership of Deborah, Stafford Township, N.J.; American Legion Post #164, Boynton Beach; and the Lifelong Learning Society of Florida, Atlantic University, Boca Raton. She was a parishioner and member of St. Thomas More R.C. Church of Boynton Beach. Terri was conversant in at least four languages and was able to communicate in all.
She is survived by her son, Robert J. McGowan Jr., a New Jersey attorney, his wife and their children, as well as by eight nephews, four nieces and several dear friends residing in various states. She was the youngest of eight children, all deceased.
Memorial services are expected to be held at St. Thomas More R.C. Church of Boynton Beach, Florida in early November with interment to follow in the Florida Keys in accordance with her final wishes.
