Carl L. Higgins

AGE: 85 • Colts Neck

Carl L. Higgins, 85, a 36 year Colts Neck resident, passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, surrounded by his family. Carl was born in Brooklyn, NY to Carl and Helga Nielsen Haldursen. He spent his childhood in Denmark. He proudly served our country in the Merchant Marines during WWII from 1943 to 1947 and then in the Marines during the Korean War from 1952 to 1955. He was a self-employed Material Handling Engineer, retiring in 1994. Carl was a Drill Instructor for the U.S. Marine Corps basic training school at Parris Island, SC; a member of the Pinebrook Fire Co. in Tinton Falls; a member of the John W. Brown Historical Society; president of the Henry Hudson Regional High School Board of Education; Chairman of the Highlands Planning Board; Commodore of the Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club. After retirement, he was a school crossing guard in Fair Haven and Red Bank until Dec 2012.

He is predeceased by his parents and by his brother, William. Carl is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Flora Thorsen Higgins and children, Stephen A. of Barcelona, Spain, Theodore F. of Keyport, Sarah H. Pomphrey and husband Edwin of Rumson, and Holly E. Higgins of Colts Neck; his sister-in-law, Lyndl Marshall of NYC; grandchildren, Jennifer Tremblay, Rachel Higgins-Garcia, Amy Higgins-Garcia, Lindsay Pomphrey Miller and husband David, E. Austin Pomphrey, and Dylan C. Higgins; two great-grandchildren, Sky and Gage, and five nieces.

Carl was a wonderful husband and always kind and generous to his family and friends. He was an avid sailor and beautified the landscape of everywhere he lived.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank, with a funeral home service at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Fair View Cemetery in Middletown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Carl's name to the National Parkinson Foundation Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 5018, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5018.
