George L. Barthelemy

AGE: 92 • Oakhurst

George L. Barthelemy, 92, of Oakhurst, Ocean Township passed away peacefully at home on Friday, December 20th, 2013 with his loving wife of seventy one years by his side. Born in Orange, he moved to Oakhurst in 1929. A 1939 graduate of Asbury Park High School, George was on their broad jump team. During one event, he missed breaking a forty five year school record by one inch. He purchased the Bayshore Coffee Company from his grandfather before being employed at Weston's Meter Company where he met the love of his life, Bette Edwards, of Cranford. They were married at Oakhurst United Methodist Church, on August 7th, 1942. He was the supervisor of the Combined Maintenance Division at Fort Monmouth, until his retirement. George was a devoted volunteer to the community .He was a member of the Oakhurst Independent Hose Company #1 since 1941. At the time of his passing he held the titles of the oldest member and longest serving member in the company. He served as fire commissioner from 1947 to 1953. In 1947, the fire department purchased a 1944 International pumper from the War Assets Administration. George traveled to Maryland to drive the truck back to Oakhurst. George was on the Committee designated to acquire the land known as Fireman's Memorial Field on Larkin Place. As a member of the Oakhurst First Aid Squad, he served as Captain in 1954 and President in 1961. George served as a Sunday school teacher at the Oakhurst United Methodist Church and Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 71 of Oakhurst. He was a member of NARFE, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, The Ocean Township Historical Museum, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the Monmouth Squares square dancers. He acquired an Advanced Class Amateur Radio license, and held the call sign N4LLT. George enjoyed camping with his family throughout the United States. He always welcomed everyone with a smile and a handshake. George was a kind gentle person always willing to help his community and family. The family is grateful for the outpouring of love, support and kindness. We are thankful for our life together and will miss him every day.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years Bette, one son, James Barthelemy and his fiancé Sharon Smith, Forked River; three daughters and their husbands, Sheryn and Walter Rapchinski of Lambertville; Nancy and Charles Manfredi of Oakhurst; Brenda and Jeffrey Harshman of Wayside; eight grandchildren, Jason and Jamie Barthelemy of Manahawkin; Alicia Barthelemy of Salem, Illinois; Michael Manfredi of Sunnyvale, California; Lisa Manfredi of Boston, Massachusetts; Bryan and Tiffany Harshman of Twentynine Palms, California; Sgt. Jeremy Harshman, USMC of Jacksonville, North Carolina; Brett Harshman of Ocean Township; Jillian Harshman and her fiancé Nikolaos Papagiannis of Wayside. He also leaves behind seven great-grand children, Jasmine Barthelemy of Manahawkin; Jordan Barthelemy of Salem, Illinois; Tristan and Kolter Whitten-Harshman of Twin Falls, Idaho; Charlize Johnson-Harshman and Jolleen and Blake Harshman of Twentynine Palms; California.

Funeral Service and burial will be private by the Fiore Funeral Home, Oakhurst, Ocean Township. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Dr. John D.
