John J. Kowal, Sr., 72, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2014 following a brief illness. John was born and raised in Raritan, NJ on September 18, 1941 to his dear parents Joseph Charles and Mary Forte Kowal and attended Somerville High School. He graduated with a Liberal Arts Degree from Rutgers University. John worked at Hartford Insurance, AIG and most recently Aegis Insurance. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Ann's Church in Raritan and a proud 47 year member and Secretary for the Raritan Fire Department Relief Hose No. 2. On Friday nights for the past 25 years, he and his wife looked forward to spending the evening with the infamous "Pizza Group". They laughed, talked and created great memories together.
John also loved to spend his summer weekends with his family at the Jersey Shore. He loved to take bike rides, walk the boardwalk and beach, and talk with his Decatur Street friends. In the winter months, it was all about Rutgers Football. A season ticket holder for 28 years, he enjoyed being at the games and playing coach. He was an avid Rutgers fan and continued to watch RU basketball and football. John was a quiet, caring man who loved his wife, children, and grandchildren unconditionally. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him, but he has now "GONE TO THE BEACH".
John is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Sian Kowal of 50 years; his loving children, Joseph Kowal of Pemberton, John Kowal Jr. of Somerville, Kristin Winchock and husband Mike of Bridgewater; and his wonderful grandchildren, Anthony, Joey, Devon, Katie, Michael, Morgan, Jake, Summer, and Jillian. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary Forte Kowal; and his dear cousin Rocky Forte.
