Walter Bertelson Obituary
AGE: 64 • Howell
Walter Samuel Bertelson, of Howell, NJ, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 at the age of 64. He grew up in Neptune where he was known as " Buddy" to all and "Bip" to some. He recently retired from Monmouth University where he was Fire & Safety Supervisor for 33 years, and when he was not working he was a dedicated volunteer fireman for the Brielle Fire Department. A life well lived, Buddy was an avid outdoor enthusiast and a competitive sportsman. He played softball throughout his life, and when he wasn't playing softball he was either hunting, fishing or most recently playing golf, where he would challenge anyone to a game, anywhere! He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and our "silent" hero who will be forever missed.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Myra Bertelson; his two brothers, Donald (Birdman) and Daryl Jay. He is survived by his long time love and adoring wife, Robin; daughter, Sheree and son-in-law, Gregg Colacichi; son, Christopher Bertelson and daughter-in-law, Candace; stepchildren, Jeffrey, Jason, and Jennylynn; daughter-in-law, Jennifer and ten adoring grandchildren; sisters, Patricia Bertelson, Linda and brother-in-law, Edward Preston and Cynthia Bruno; brother, Robert Bertelson and sister-in-law, Lynette; niece, Renata Bruno; nephews, Eric Preston, Robert D., Justin J. and Patrick Bertelson; his close friend/cousin, Raymond Boyd, and his lifelong sidekick, Michael LaCour.
A celebration of his life will be held Thurs. Jan. 30 from 7 to 9pm at the Francioni, Taylor & Lopez Funeral Home, 1200 10th and Atkins Ave, Neptune. A 11am service will be held Fri. Jan. 31, 2014 at the funeral home.

Our prayers, love and sympathy to the Bertelson Family. Buddy had a tremendous love for his family and friends and they will always have those memories to cherish. I will truly miss his smile and his sense of humor, and Kenny will miss those pool games. He was such a fierce competitor! May he rest in peace, and his memory live on in the hearts of everyone who loved him.

Dad/Grandpa,
It's so hard to believe that you're gone. My heart, head and emotions have been in contradiction ever since you left: I miss you, yet I know you're with us; I feel like we got robbed, yet I'm so grateful for the time we had; I'm sad over all the things we had still to show you, yet proud for what you saw from us before you left. Losing someone so central to ones life is something I don't think I will ever understand.
All I do know is how very fortunate I feel to have been blessed with the honor of having you as a dad. Because although you're my father-in-law, you have been a dad to me from day one. I cherish the relationship we had and am a better person from all that you have taught me. Definitely better at pool and shooting!
We miss you every single day and will continue to keep your memory alive through Chance, your little "tink-tink", and the grandchildren you never got to meet. I so wish we had just a few more years, but like they say, the good ones go too soon.

Buddy, I remember our rock fights, the time in grammar school that all the Bertelson boys had Mohawk haircuts and the many hours and days spent at your house where Myra always treated me like one of your family. I have known you since we were ten years old. Remember hanging out in Bradley Park Playground? There will never be another like you and you will be missed unbearably.
