Walter Hulsen Obituary

Walter E. Hulsen Sr.

AGE: 85 • Bridgewater

Walter E. Hulsen, Sr, 85 of Bridgewater, NJ passed away peacefully after a long illness on October 28 at Foothill Acres Nursing Home, Hillsborough, NJ.

Visitation will be from 2PM to 5PM on Sunday, November 2, at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30AM on Monday, November 3 at Immaculate Conception Church, 35 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ. Interment to follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Route 28, Bridgewater, NJ.

Walter, "Sonny", was born March 16, 1929 in Newark, NJ and lived in Hillside and Union, NJ before moving to Bridgewater forty-two years ago to raise his family. Walter was an avid railfan. He shared his fondness and encyclopedic knowledge of railroading with friends and family and was proud of the fact that he had traveled the entire continental US by train. Walter was a talented craftsman, creating a remarkable model railroad in his basement and possessed the ability to repair nearly anything.

Walter, a first generation American, celebrated his German heritage and loved listening to polka music. He was proud to serve his country during the Korean War, earning the rank of corporal while receiving the Meritorious Service Award. Walter was an electrician for the Lehigh Valley Railroad for twenty years -- a job he would often reminisce about. He then worked for the former Ciba-Geigy Corporation of Summit, NJ for over twenty-seven years, eventually becoming Supervisor of Maintenance, before retiring in 1993.

Walter was preceded in death by his dear brother, Joseph. He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Ellen, his daughter Ingrid Knowlton and her husband Troy, his son Walter Jr, and his wife Kate, grandchildren, Max & Sam Knowlton and Sarah Hulsen, Sister-in-law, Carol Hulsen, nephew, Eric Hulsen and wife Patti, niece, Kris and husband Michael, many beloved cousins and great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Adult Day Care Center of Somerset County, 872 East Main Street, Bridgewater, NJ 08807. [email protected]

Dear Ellen and Family,

Drew and I were sorry to learn of Walter's passing. He was a true gentleman, and you gave him great care.

Words seem rather inadequate at a time like this, but perhaps knowing we are thinking of you will be a comfort.

Our many thoughts and prayers are yours in your great loss.
Will be at the mass in the morning.

Love and God bless always!
