Christopher Schilling Obituary

Christopher M. Schilling

AGE: 44 • Toms River

Christopher M. Schilling, 44, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, with family present at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, from injuries when struck by a vehicle while participating in a charity bike ride seven days earlier.

A lifelong resident of Toms River, he was a 1989 graduate of Toms River South High School and attended Mercer County Community College and N.J. Institute of Technology, and played softball for many years on the American Legion team. He was employed by Home Depot in Toms River as the Department Head of Receiving.

More recently, Chris was a fervent mountain biker and active in the bike scene. As a member of JORBA and Team MTBNJ, he was involved in racing, group rides, trail maintenance sessions, race promotion, and bike festivals. Often the only thing limiting his involvement in things bike-related was the number of daylight hours available, a problem he solved by adding lights. Chris was incredibly well-liked and respected in the bike community and will be sorely missed by those who had the pleasure to cross paths with him.

He is survived by his mother, Wanda Schilling, brothers and sisters, Thomas Schilling, Candace Schilling Cowdrick, John Schilling, Diana Schilling Frazier, and Christel Schilling Mastropierro; sister- and brothers-in-law, Meg Schilling, Larry Cowdrick, Jeff Frazier, and John Mastropierro; and nephews and nieces Steven Schilling, Larry Cowdrick Jr., Jessica Cowdrick, Michelle Cowdrick Edwards, Devon Schilling, and Michael and Jonathan Mastropierro. He was predeceased by his father, Henry (Hank) Schilling.

Following his wishes, Christopher will help many others through the Sharing Network organ and tissue donation program.

The Schilling family thanks the many family, friends, and co-workers who have supported them through remembrances, photos, and Home Depot's "Just Keep Pedaling Chris" and MTBNJ's "#singlespeedforschilling" campaigns. A celebration of Christopher's life will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Beachwood Community Center 147 Compass Ave., Beachwood, NJ 08722. Carmona-Bolen Home for Funerals in Toms River is in charge of arrangements. Condolences can be sent to www.carmonablenfh.com.

I was is the same grade as Chris and was in some classes with him. I don't Renner him that well but, when I heard the news 5 years ago, it saddened me a lot. I too mountain bike and road a bike on the road in Oregon for many years. Oregon has a lot of bike lanes. They have a lot more room. But, I believe that NJ could do better with widening the roads that go through the pine barrens and add bike lanes. Maybe someone could start a petition. I don't ride much on NJ roads since moving back. Anyway, he sounded like he was living life to the fullest and that is the best way to live. My thoughts are with his family.

I'll always remember those times spent with my good buddy. It's been sad knowing about losing my great friend. When we'd wrestle, he'd always win. Everything he did he was the best at. Now I will celebrate his life and be keeping those memories of our friendship alive. Gabe DeFreitas
