Betty Jane Cometa

AGE: 83 • Beach Haven

Betty Jane Cometa, 83, of Beach Haven, died on Tuesday, October 27, near Long Beach Island, NJ. Born in Plattsburgh, NY, she was the daughter of the late Crockett and Fannie Harrison. Betty Jane earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Design from The University of Michigan in 1961 and went on to design children's clothing and theater costumes in New York City. Betty Jane married her husband of 52 years, Angelo Cometa, on July 29, 1961; he predeceased her on April 16, 2014. A devoted wife, Betty Jane actively supported her husband in his law profession as well as with his involvement and 1990-1991 presidency of the NY State Bar Association. Betty Jane and Angelo resided in Montclair, NJ, from 1967-1994, and New York City from 1995-2013. In 2013, Betty Jane moved to the family's summer home in Beach Haven, NJ, to reside by the sea for the remainder of her life. Betty Jane loved to solve, edit and construct crossword puzzles and was regularly published in the New York Times during the late 1980s. She also loved to travel, cook, read and watch her beloved NY Mets. She was a caring woman, loved by all who knew her.

Betty Jane was predeceased by her sister, Lee Olive Harrison. She is survived by her sisters Delia Anne Granger, Sarah May Koogler and Virginia Sue Forstot; her son, Thomas Cometa; three daughters, Ariane Cometa, Allison Cometa-Schnalzer, and Victoria White; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on November 8, at 11:30am in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Innocents, Beach Haven, NJ.
