Frank Ides Obituary

Frank R. Ides

AGE: 82 • Bradley Beach

Frank R. "Pop Pop" Ides, 82, of Bradley Beach, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2016 at JSUMC. He was surrounded by family. Frank was born to Charles and Anna Ides at their home in Lakehurst, NJ in 1933. He was the 8th of 9 children. The Ides family moved to Ocean Grove in 1936, where Frank attended Neptune Public Schools. He worked at the Ides Family Restaurant, Seaside Heights, until he enlisted in the USMC in December of 1951. As an Intelligence Specialist of the 1st Marine division, 1st Recon Battalion, Frank rose to the rank of Corporal while proudly serving our country in the Korean War. Soon after his honorable discharge from the military, he moved to NYC. There he started work as a bartender at the Vogue Room on E.57th in Manhattan, and met his future wife Sylvia. Frank often recalled his time at the Vogue Room quite fondly, as he met many famous and interesting people while working behind the bar. After moving to Long Island and establishing a family, Frank moved back to the shore area in 1973 in order to help care for his aging parents. He continued bartending until he started his painting career at Electro Impulse Laboratories, Neptune, retiring in 2012 at the age of 79.

Pop Pop was a regular Renaissance man and dabbled in everything from the fine arts to car repair, from computer technologies to handicapping a horse race. You could find him during the summer season, more often than not, at Monmouth Park Racetrack. He loved singing to all kinds of music, and enjoyed watching classic movies. Frank was an avid reader, and his leather-bound book collection was well read by his grandchildren. Pop Pop passed his love of cooking "juicy meatloaf" and "pop roast" on to multiple generations of family, and no one will forget Pop's famous "goolies" AKA ice cream sundaes. Frank will probably be best remembered for his off-color humor and catch phrases, such as: "Gotta get goin'" "Good kid that kid" and "That's what she said".

Frank leaves behind three daughters: Anna Scanlon and her husband Steven, Cynthia Ides-Meyer and her husband Kurt, and Deborah Ides; seven grandchildren: Jen, Chris, John, Debbie, Liz and her husband Jason, Frank, and Kurt and his wife Jessica; four great-grandchildren: Blake, Madison, Oliver, and Josephine. Frank also leaves behind three siblings; Lillian, Alice, and William, and will be missed by many beloved nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.

A memorial celebrating Frank's life will be held on Sunday, February 21, 2-4 P.M., at Ely Funeral Home, Neptune. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: sjtbadoption.com; a racehorse rescue foundation.
