Alice Dewey Obituary

Alice Marion (Chubb) Dewey entered eternal life peacefully on Sunday morning, February 8, 2015, in Live Oak, California, at the age of ninety-seven. She was a resident of Sutter County for over seventy-three years.

Alice was born on October 24, 1917, in Oakland, California. She grew up in Berkeley where she attended Emerson School, Willard Junior High, and Berkeley High School. She then attended the University of California, Berkeley, (Cal) graduating in 1939 with a major in mathematics and extended studies in Latin and English. Following earning her teaching credential from Cal, she taught high school in Fort Jones, California. After two years of teaching in Fort Jones, she accepted a position at Yuba City High School where she taught for eight and a half years. It was in Yuba City, where, while square dancing, she met her soon-to-be husband Martin Dewey from Live Oak, California. They would have a wonderful marriage that lasted nearly forty-six years. After all their children were in school, she taught at Gridley High School and then at Live Oak High School. While at Live Oak, she earned credentials at CSU Chico to include kindergarten through junior college. She finished her teaching career in the mid 1980s at Notre Dame School in Marysville, California.

Predeceasing Alice, but with her now, are her husband Martin E. Dewey, her grandson Martin Micheal Theiss, parents Phillip and Gertrude (Darrow) Chubb, and her brother Phillip Chubb. Loved ones left behind are her children Martin "Doug" Dewey, Janet Dewey Theiss (and husband Bill), Allan Dewey, Bruce Dewey (and wife Julie), three grandchildren Elyse, Michelle, and John "Johnny" Dewey, her sister Elizabeth Jane "BJ" Darrow, and many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

Alice gave to her community in many ways including memberships in organizations, frequently serving as an officer. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Berkeley, the Live Oak Presbyterian Church, the First Presbyterian Church of Gridley, the American Association of University Women, the Live Oak Women's Club, Tri-County Community Concert Association, Retired Teachers, Nuestro Home Department, UC Berkeley Alumni Association, Live Oak PTA, Live Oak Grange, Nuestro and Live Oak Farm Bureaus, Native Daughters of the Golden West, the Encinal Squares at Encinal School, the Sutter Beauts Square Dance Club, the Roger Williams Club, Feather River Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, and various ballroom dance clubs. She was an Assistant Den Mother and proud Boy Scout and Camp Fire Girls mother. During her life she donated over five gallons of blood to the Sacramento Blood Bank.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Gridley on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at 1:30 pm with a time of fellowship following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice. Please join us if you knew Alice or know her family as we celebrate this wonderful lady.
