Joe Cobb Obituary

Local business owner, Joe Cobb, age 85, born September 18, 1928, passed away at his residence in Grass Valley, CA, on Thursday morning, January 9, 2014. He was born in Phoenix, AZ, to parents Lola Mae and William Alfred Cobb. His father died when he was only 1 year old. The family moved to Marysville in 1930, and remained in the area until the present day.

Joe was preceded in death by his mother Lola Beavers, stepfather Lou Beavers, daughter Neysa Browning, and his brother Richard Coy Cobb, and half-sister Hazel Parker.

He is survived by his wife Cathleen Cobb; son Joe Cobb Jr.; daughter Donna Ruiz; sisters: Colleene Shields and Sandra Brolliar; brother Ansel Beavers, nephew and niece Darren and Crystal Beavers; grandchildren Petrina and Keenan Browning, and four great grandchildren; step-daughters Denise and Darren Chan, step-son Gunther and Kathy Brauner, step-granddaughters Rachelle and Nicole Chan, and step-grandsons Bo and Brad Brauner.

Joe got his start peddlin' fruit with his mother Lola and stepfather Lou back in the thirties. With his hard earned money saved, he went to the local Dodge Dealer in 1946 and bought a new truck for $900. After that, he went on to make better money buyin' and sellin' tractors and equipment. In the late 40's and early 50's he went on to become the owner/operator of a successful logging company called Cobb Equipment, and bought a new Peterbilt in 1953. In another 10 years, he started a motorcycle sales/repair shop with his brother Ansel Beavers serving as his ace mechanic. In 1966, Joe started selling Honda motorcycles, bringing Hondas to Grass Valley for the first time - hence the name: Cobb Honda.

In 1975, Joe bought a small lot next to the Shell Station at the corner of North Beale and Hammonton-Smartville Rd., calling it Cobb Equipment, from the days where he got his start. Shortly after, he purchased the Shell Station and he has been buying/selling/trading vehicles of all types and makes ever since.

Joe was a great friend to many. A loving husband, a successful businessman, an amazing father; he will be missed by many. One of the last of a dying breed, none will ever take his place.

Services will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Forest View Cemetery in Nevada City, CA, located on Red Dog Rd.

A memorial service will be held at Gold Country Calvary Chapel on Dog Bar Rd. at 12:00 noon after the service.
