Obituaries from Two Days Ago

Smith, Diane Carol*
We mourn the loss of Diane Carol Smith, who passed away December 13, 2014. Born October 13, 1963, she was the daughter of Carol Travis and Allan Smith. Diane excelled at academics, graduating as Valedictorian of Exeter Union High School and from Harvard with a degree in Economics. She began her professional career in Boston as a scheduler in the oil industry, where she used her love of mathematics, games and puzzles to solve difficult logistic problems in markets around the world. Her expertise eventually resulted in a position with the trading firm Goldman Sachs. As Diane's career interests shifted she became a gifted teacher who touched many students' lives. She was named New Teacher of the Year, being recommended by her colleagues at Robbins School. She then moved on to teach at Barry, Riverbend and Yuba City High School. She particularly loved teaching math, science and critical thinking skills. Swimming was one of Diane's life long passions. She excelled as a competitor, stroke instructor, and coach. She was nationally ranked in several events throughout her AAU and high school years. Her signature blue swim bag and board shorts were a regular sight at Gauche Aquatic Park, where she trained with her friends on the YC Masters Swim Team. She looked forward to annual January trips to Hawaii to open water swim and enjoy great food and the company of her swim friends. Many members of the community learned to swim or participated in Diane's water aerobics classes. Diane was also an avid reader, especially of crime novels, and was a long time member of Crane Literary Guild (Book Club). She also became a devout NFL football fan and spent many autumn Sundays in her pajamas watching games and correcting stacks of student papers. Diane was almost 6 feet tall, beautiful and had wonderful blue eyes. She was the love of her long time partner Chris Mammarelli's life. She was the feisty sister of Cheryll Hare (John), Jim Smith (Deb) and Carin Wirt. She was Auntie Diane to Matthew and Russell Hare, their friends and Daniel Wirt who will miss her "antics." She is survived by her mom, Carol Travis (Charles), father Allan Smith, many dear cousins and aunts, countless colleagues, students and swimmers. In lieu of flowers, people may honor Diane's passions by donating to the Sutter County or Tulare County Libraries, Yuba City Parks and Recreation Aquatics Program, the Exeter Union High School Aquatics Program, or to a local Cat Rescue. A Memorial Open House will be held for Diane at Gauche Aquatic Park, 421 C Street, Yuba City, Saturday, December 27, 2014, from 2-4pm. A memorial will also be held in Exeter, California, in the spring. Send Condolences to

Obituaries from the Past Three Days

Stonecipher, Lois Irene*
Lois Irene Stonecipher (Shoemaker) was born September 9, 1928 at Macdoel, CA and went to be with the Lord, at the age of 86, on December 20, 2014 at her home in Live Oak surrounded by her loving family. Survivors include three children: Bonnie Harnish of Live Oak, Chris Stonecipher (Lori) of Grants Pass, OR, and Scott Stonecipher (Maria) of Bloomfield, CT. She is also survived by grandchildren: Suzzanne Knipe (Gary), Dennis Harned Jr. (Angie), Ramona Tyler (Mike), Julie Harnish, Tralisa Woods (Virgil), C.J. Stonecipher III (Trish), Michele Parker, Rob Stonecipher, Yvonne Carpenter (Jamie), Scotty Stonecipher, Heather Stonecipher, 34 great-grandchildren, and her only niece and nephew, Summer Willson (Bill) and Steven Cook (Hal Stradley). She is also survived by her best friend of over 61 years, Dorothy Quigg (Cecil). She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, C.J. Stonecipher, her father, Rolla Shoemaker, mother Ethel Shoemaker, and grandson, Jeff Harnish. Lois was a homemaker for the early years of her marriage. She began her working career as a bookkeeper at Gridley Motors, followed by Tucker Chevrolet and retired after working at Cal-Gas Gridley as a bookkeeper/accountant for over 20 years. Lois was affectionately known as "Grandmother" to her grandchildren and all their friends. She had a unique gift of making each of her children and grandchildren feel as if they were her favorite. Each one knew they were loved very much. She also had the gift of making everyone she came in contact with feel very special. Lois was very active in the community and schools while raising her children. She was a member of Native Daughters of the Golden West, Service League, PTA, and a leader for Cub Scouts. She loved playing games and played pinochle with a group of good friends every Thursday. Lois also loved to entertain and celebrate special events with large gatherings in her home. She gave her heart to Jesus and joined the First Baptist Church of Live Oak on April 19, 1970. One of her proudest accomplishments was being a part of forming Lunch Bunch, which now serves lunch to over 150 high school students every Thursday and shares with them the love of God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Lois left notes that instructed her children that her "Going Home Celebration" was to be about the present and future and not the past. She wanted everyone to know how much she loved the Lord and how important it is to give our hearts to Him. One of her friends commented that it certainly was livelier in heaven on December 20, 2014. She was a joy to all who knew her and will be sorely missed but we take great consolation in knowing that she will be spending Christmas with Jesus this year. Her "Going Home Celebration" will be held Saturday, December 27, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 2480 Pennington Road, Live Oak. In lieu of flowers, Lois requested that donations be made to Lunch Bunch, c/o Cindy Langford, Treasurer, 2969 Gum Street, Live Oak, CA 95953. Send Condolences at
