John Melvin Newton


John Melvin Newton, 73, passed away on Friday, June 13, 2014, following a short battle with dementia.

John is survived by his wife of 47 years, Eileen, his two children, Stephanie and Andrew, his brother Robert (Joyce) of Stamford, CT, two sisters Mary (Ken) Whittaker of Brimfield, IL, and Hila (Karl) Swanson of Tryon, North Carolina, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Morgan Newton, Jr., and Hila Marie Newton, a sister, Janie Wilkerson, and brothers, William Edward (Ed) Newton and James David Newton.

A long-time Yuba Sutter resident, John was born on December 3, 1940, in Santa Rosa, Texas. When he was a child, he moved to the area with his family and they settled in Meridian. John graduated from Meridian Elementary School, Sutter Union High School and Chico State College. He proudly completed his military service with the U.S. Army Reserves.

John taught elementary school at Marcum Illinois Elementary School in East Nicolaus and Pleasant Grove Elementary School from 1966-1979. During this time he was also an assistant football coach at East Nicolaus High School. He retired in 2005 from his second career as an Accountant with the Employment Development Department.

John loved the Lord Jesus Christ and served Him wherever he attended. John was a member of The Gideons International and River Valley Christian Fellowship. He was a Word of Life Associate for many years serving alongside Word of Life Area Missionary Steve Gledhill.

Viewing/visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, June 23, 2014, at Ullrey Memorial Chapel located at 817 Almond Street, Yuba City, CA 95991. Interment will be at Sutter Cemetery. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at River Valley Christian Fellowship located at 1764 Tierra Buena Road, Yuba City, CA 95993.
