Ulysses Self Obituary


Ulysses Cortez Self was born on June 22, 1918, in Culman Co., Alabama, to Josie A. and C. Sylvanus Self. "Uly" passed away peacefully on April 25, 2014 at the River-Valley Care Center in Live Oak, California. He was 95 years old.

Ulysses was proceeded in death by his wife of 72 years, Elinor Scrogin Self, and daughter Jo Ann Lay of Chico.

Uly is survived by his children: Barbara Stroup (Jerry) of Yuba City, Michael Self of Lincoln and Susan Caskey (Greg) of Martinez, and son-in-law Chuck Lay of Chico. His sisters Pearl Dollar and Dyettie Williams of Live Oak; his sister Myrtle Flowers (Charles) of Marysville; his brothers Jackson Self and Jessie Self (Gayle) of Live Oak. Uly had 8 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 10 great- great grandchildren.

Uly moved to California with his parents and two younger sisters when he was 5 years old. He and Elinor lived in the home he built at 2451 Fir Street for 60 years.

Uly was a welder for Yuba Sutter Oil and Burner Company for many years. During his last 25 years before retiring Uly and his brother-in-law, Harold Scrogin, farmed numerous orchards in Sutter and Butte Counties.

Uly was a long time member of Live Oak Lions Club and a Volunteer Fireman for Live Oak. Uly and Elinor were members of the First Baptist Church of Live Oak, where he served on the church board.

Uly enjoyed restoring old cars. After retiring he took classes in cutting gemstones, which were made into jewelry for his children and grandchildren. Uly was an avid hunter and fisherman in his younger days.

A graveside service will be conducted on May 9, 2014 at 11am. at the Live Oak Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend service.

I have found memories of my Uncle Uly and all the family gatherings in Live Oak when I was a young girl. He was my father's brother (Milford S. Self). God Bless his sisters, brothers and his children one and all. My loving thoughts are with you all.
