Alan Bengyel Obituary
July 11, 1946 - February 14, 2014

Alan, 67, died suddenly at his home in Sutter Creek early Friday morning, February 14, 2014.

Alan was always ready to have a conversation and had made friends that way throughout his personal and professional life. Alan loved Amador County ever since 1999, when he was city administrator of Ione. He was happy to retire here in 2011 with his wife of 31 years, Kristin.

Alan Bengyel was born in Regensburg, Germany and emigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1957. He graduated from Washington High School in 1964 and joined the Air Force in 1965. Alan was proud of his service as a new citizen. He maintained a relationship with different veteran associations as both a philanthropic and active participant ever since he was honorably discharged in 1969 from his overseas assignment and Beale Air Force Base.

After his service he returned to school, graduating from California State University at Chico with a master's degree in public administration. This started his long relationship in Yuba County and with public agencies in small rural counties. Alan was city administrator of Marysville and worked for Yuba City and Butte County.

In Fresno County he championed water issues in cities of Huron, Mendota, and Orange Cove after leaving his position as town manager in Fairfax in Marin County.

Alan loved to provide his special kind of humor in any social environment, especially with his neighbors in Sutter Creek of which he was extremely fond. He loved what Amador offered for friendship and entertainment and appreciated those so much, who helped to provide it.

He was preceded in death by his father, Julius Bengyel and his mother, Maria (Pilz) Bengyel.

Alan leaves behind his wife, Kristin, who he married 31 years ago on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. His son, Brooks Bengyel, 30, will miss his dad as will his brother, Frank of Tallahassee, Florida. He is also survived by his sister, Ilonka and brother, Hans Bengyel, Alan will be missed by his many caring and loving nephews and nieces across the country who he loved to know, watch grow into wonderful people and visit whenever he could.

Alan was a truly unique individual who ventured across the Atlantic with his younger brother, Frank; his father, Julius; and little else. He strived to help those he served from Ione and Amador, Marysville and Yuba County; so many in Fresno County; and all the way to Marin County.

Friends are invited to attend a visitation Friday, February 21, 2014 from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Daneri Mortuary in Jackson. A reception will follow at the family home in Sutter Creek. Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 108, P.O. Box 964, Sutter Creek, CA 95685.
