Alice Hoppin Obituary

Alice passed away peacefully at home on July 13, 2016, at the age of 99. She died as she lived, well-loved and in the company of family.

She was born April 3, 1917, the youngest child of Mabel and Edward Evan Nuttall. Her childhood was spent on the family ranch near Knights Landing. Stories of the ranch where she taught herself to swim in the Sacramento River and summers spent in Pacific Grove were among her favorite memories shared with family and friends. She graduated from Woodland High School in 1934 as the nation headed deeper into the Great Depression. The experiences she had during that time and WWII that followed fostered her sense of hard work, thrift, and fierce loyalty to those whom she loved. In 1936, she married Charles Rossiter Hoppin Jr., a third generation Yoloan. Ross enlisted in the Army Air Corp. in 1942. She drove across the country to Kentucky to be near him at Camp Campbell before he was deployed to the European theatre. It was one of the few times in her life she ever left California. As the daughter, wife, mother and grandmother of farmers in the Sutter Basin, she simply didn't see why anyone would want to be anywhere else.

Following the war, Alice and Ross established their home in Woodland where they raised their children, Charles Rossiter Hoppin III (Kathy) and Claire Read (Mike). She dedicated herself to parenting and was a devoted homemaker of many creative talents. She took great pride in her garden, especially with her ability to propagate and arrange succulents which she enjoyed sharing with family and friends. Her needlework was exceptional as were her culinary talents. But mostly she will be remembered for her slightly wicked sense of humor and absolute devotion to her grandchildren: Casey (Tammy) Hoppin, of Yuba City, Kelly (C.J.) Johnson, of Colusa, Alex (Jennifer) Read, of Sacramento, Michael (Margaret) Read, of Rochester, NY, and Matthew (Merril Lavezzo) Read, of Sacramento. She also felt herself blessed to have great-grandchildren: Casey & Quincy Hoppin, and Ross, Elyse & Claire Read.

Alice was predeceased by husband Ross in 1992, and her beloved sisters, Jennie Russell Johnson and Claire Nuttall.

Alice's later years were greatly enriched by the devoted care and companionship of Lavenia, who remained her steadfast "wingman" until her passing.

There will be a private service at a later date. The family suggests her memory may best be honored by extending a kindness to others or a .
