Alice Smith Obituary

Alice Lee Smith, a lifelong resident of Williams passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2011 from respiratory failure. She was born on July 18, 1923 to Aileen Cropp Griffin and Clifford Milton Griffin in the house she lived in most of her life. Her parents and grandparents were local farmers who helped to settle this area. Alice Lee attended Williams schools and graduated from Chico State College. She taught elementary school in Maxwell and Williams for thirty years, touching the lives of many. She remained active in the community after retirement, serving on the Williams Planning Commission and the Colusa County Grand Jury. She was a strong leader who held family and community above all else. She enjoyed playing bridge, watching baseball, cooking, gardening, playing the piano and going to "the coast". She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Hugh Smith, her daughter Gayle, son-in-law Pete, her adored granddaughters Monica Vaughan and Heather Lee (Jacob), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will long be remembered as a strong, loving, guiding force of life. If desired, donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Sacramento Valley Museum or the Williams Fire Department. Visitation will be held at McNary-Moore Funeral Chapel on Friday, June 17 at 5-8. A funeral service will be held at McNary-Moore Funeral Chapel on Saturday, June 18 at 10am, burial to follow at Williams Cemetery. Send Condolences at www.appealdemocrat.com

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Mrs. Smith was my kindergarten teacher more than 50 years ago. We were so lucky to have had such a terrific and kind mentor in our young lives. Even at the young age of 6, I can still fondly remember our class gathering around her big, padded piano as she played and we sang every song in her song book. Her daughter Gayle was such a dear friend to me and at times my protector. All of the kids growing up in Williams in the 50's and 60's were so fortunate to have had the foundation of our lives so carefully and loving constructed by those terrific teachers like Alice Lee, Mildred Turnow and Jean Palmer. My heartfelt sympathy to Hugh and Gayle and their entire family.
