Arthur Willis Chase Jr. Obituary

Arthur Willis Chase Jr. , a lifelong resident of Marysville, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving family on August 8, 2015, at the age of 91. He was born June 24, 1924, in the same home where he resided for the majority of his life.

Willis graduated from Marysville High School where he met his future wife, Elaine French. They were married for 73 years, and had four children. Soon after they were married, Willis enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II; service that he was proud of his whole life. He was assigned to the Asiatic Pacific Corridor where he was a surgical technician during the battles in Guam, Okinawa and Kwajalein. He was awarded the World War Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. He and his buddies from the 854th Engineer battalion Army Air Corps met for reunions regularly.

Upon his return from the war, Willis and Elaine, and his childhood best friend, Stephen Philpott, started Bearing Belt Chain Co., which expanded to 7 stores in 4 states. At 91, he was still running his business of 64 years, until just a few weeks before his death. He was a private plane pilot for over 50 years, and used his plane to fly to oversee his different stores, along with pleasure trips to his beloved cabin every weekend in the summer months.

Willis was an avid outdoorsman. He was a duck hunter for over 80 years, and was a respected member of the Foothill Farm Duck Club. He and Elaine had a cabin in Warner Valley, near Chester for 46 years, where he fished and went deer hunting. He loved nothing more than to have his family come up to the cabin.

Willis was deeply proud of his Marysville roots, and was involved in many activities in the Yuba-Sutter area, including Rotary Club, the Elks Club, Kiwanis, President of Peach Tree Golf and Country Club, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and Sutter Buttes Regional Aviation Association.

Willis will be remembered for his love of family, his devotion to his country, and his many friends where ever he went.

He is survived by his wife Elaine, his sisters, Marian Chipman and Natalie Cartwright, daughters Cynthia Whitmarsh (David), Heidi Cole (Dwight), and Stephanie Brooner (Louis), grandchildren Stacy Pollicino, Jennifer Kersey, Ryan Cole, Stephen Whitmarsh, Christine Whitmarsh, Melissa Durrans, and Jeff Brooner. He also has 16 great-grandchildren, 6 great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur Willis Chase and Hazel Chism Chase, his brother Arthur Rubel Chase, his sister, Dorothea Curtiss, his son Arthur Willis Chase III, and his grandson, Patrick Harding Whitmarsh.

Services will be Thursday, August 13, 2015 at 10:00 am. at Ullrey Memorial Chapel 817 Almond Street, Yuba City, CA. Interment will be at Sierra View Cemetary with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Rideout Fremont Hospice, or to Ducks Unlimited.
