Barbara Fruitman Obituary

Barbara passed peacefully at her home on November 24, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 24, 1937, in Liberty, Kentucky, daughter of Van and Hazel Thomas.

Upon graduating from high school in Phoenix, Arizona, she moved to Anchorage, Alaska and worked as a secretary for the FBI. She moved to the Northern California area and worked for PG&E and transferred to the Marysville office in 1975.

After marrying Robert Fruitman in 1979, they opened up The Waterbed Store in Yuba City and it became a family business. After Bob passed the bar and opened up his practice in Marysville Barbara worked with him and that became another family business.

Barbara was a world traveler, an artist, knitter and a piano player. She enjoyed boating and mostly enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Barbara was known for her generosity and was a friend to everyone and will be deeply missed.

As an expression of her love for Bob and the religion she converted to Judaism in 1981. Since 1981 Barbara was a beloved member of Yuba-Sutter Congregation Beth Shalom. At the age of 65, Barbara celebrated her Bat Mitzvah. She served on the Synagogue Board in multiple capacities including president and the Sunshine Chairperson. Barbara was actively involved in the local chapter of AIPAC, the American Israel Political Action Committee. She served on the commission for the Preservation of Pioneer Jewish Cemeteries and Landmarks in the West, the City of Marysville Cemetery Commission and in 2008 was instrumental in the restoration and re-dedication of the Jewish Cemetery in Marysville.

Barbara is survived by her children: Thomas Warka (Jette) of Beaumont, Julie Martinez (Dan) of Yuba City, Cathy Meador (Dave) of San Jose, Annie Thomas (Rich) of Yuba City, Ira Fruitman (Julie) of Foster City, Steven Fruitman of Westin, Florida; her grandchildren: James and Kristen Benton, Sara Belle Thomas, Jason Elia, Katlyn and Jacob Meador, Max Fruitman, Benjamin, Gabriel and Maya Fruitman; great-grandson Beckett Benton; her brother Tom Thomas, Arizona; nephew, David Thomas; nieces, Jessica Fruitman, Nancy Elton and Jill Thomas.

The funeral was held at the Eternal Home Cemetery in Colma, California on Monday, December 1, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.

A memorial service will be announced for the local area some time in the future.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sutter North Hospice.
