Barbara McCorkle Obituary

Barbara Jean Hanna McCorkle The lovely Barbara Jean Hanna McCorkle passed away Wednesday morning, September 8, 2010 in her home in Yuba City. She had been a Yuba City resident for over 32 years. She was 87. Barbara was born December 22, 1922 in Alameda, California where she grew up and made friends she kept her entire life. She was married for 40 years to her husband John McCorkle, who passed away in 1991. Both Barbara and John shared the same December 22 birthday, although several years apart. She was the unbelievably loving and devoted mother to her two children, John McCorkle of Citrus Heights, CA, and Joanie Lang of Colorado Springs, CO. She was also the grandmother of three wonderful grandchildren she loved dearly, Joe Ziser of Franktown, CO, Emily Ziser of Woodland, CA, and JJ Ziser of Colorado Springs, CO. Every relative was extremely proud to be in her presence and to be a member of her family. In December, 1998 the Appeal-Democrat named her a "Holiday Angel" for her selfless and years-long volunteer work with friends cleaning, repairing and making dolls, doll clothing and doll beds and other love for children for Toys For Tots. She was quoted in the article as saying "Every child, no matter how rich or how poor they are, need something to hug, and I think that's so true." Her friends and family always knew she was a Holiday Angel and much more. Year round. It was in her blood; she could not be any other way. Her successful philosophy on life was written on a small sign above her door. It reads, "Live Well. Laugh Often. Love Much." All friends and acquaintances are welcome at a memorial service on Saturday, September 18 at 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 3600 South Walton Ave., Yuba City. In lieu of flowers kindly send a donation in her name to Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, 1140 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL 60607. Final interment will be at a family-only service at the National Cemetery in San Francisco. Send Condolences www.appealdemocrat.com

Mrs. McCorkle was very kind whenever we came to visit, and her remembrances of growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area are the stories I remember the most. I am very sorry for your loss, John and Joanie.

I still have the sweater she gave me, too. Thank you for those memories.

May words of comfort rest gently upon your heart, and in time may they become words of healing.

So sorry for you loss, As the program coordinator for Toys for Tots for two years I had the pleasure of meeting Barbara and visiting her home to pick up the dolls that she worked so lovingly on for the children in our community. These were the most special donation I received and were so treasured by the families who received them. She was a very special lady who I am proud to have known and I know will be missed.
