Bhupinder Singh "Sonny" Kalkat Obituary

Bhupinder "Sonny" Singh Kalkat, passed away on April 7, 2015 at the age of 45.

Charismatic, compassionate, wise, confident, determined… all words that describe Sonny.

Sonny was a mentor and leader who was close enough to relate to others, yet far enough ahead to motivate them.

His leadership was surpassed only by his ambition, which did not get in the way of the opportunity to converse with a familiar face in passing. Sonny walked two steps ahead of the curve, while paving the road for generations behind him.

Sonny was born in India and migrated with his family to Live Oak, California as a small child. Sonny's thirst for knowledge earned him the title of valedictorian at Live Oak High School in 1987. He attended California State University, Chico and went on to the University of California, Davis to complete his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Managerial Economics in 1991, followed by an MBA in 1993. Sonny was a fellow of class "33" and graduated from the California Agricultural Leadership Program in 2004.

Sonny found his passion early in life while helping run the family farming business. His passion and knowledge soon translated into helping expand his family farming business while also simultaneously growing his own farming operation.

Along his great successes, he always had a drive to give back to society. His philanthropic efforts included setting up a fund to help local patients who could not pay for expensive brand named medication and supporting numerous local community service organizations. He also made substantial donations to a cause dedicated to helping those who needed eye surgeries in the poorest parts of India through the Sankara Eye Foundation.

Sonny was an avid golfer and never missed an opportunity to golf with his friends at the Peach Tree Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed being an active member of his community, as well as spending time socializing with lots of friends and family.

Sonny is survived by his wife, Kamaljit Kaur Kalkat, his pride and joy two children; Jaspal Singh Kalkat and Kareena Kaur Kalkat, his brother Baljinder Singh Kalkat, his sister Sagnita Kaur Rai, his father Surinder Singh Kalkat, his mother Manjit Kaur Kalkat, and hundreds of other family and friends who will truly miss his aura.

Sonny was preceded in death by his grandfather Sohan Singh Kalkat, grandmother Amar Kaur Kalkat, maternal grandfather Kartar Singh Rai, and grandmother Gurbachan Kaur Rai.
