On May 22, 2015, Carol A. Nelson of Marysville died of age related causes at the age of 89. Carol was born the daughter of James Murray and Phoebe Murray (Bevan) in San Francisco on June 28, 1925. Her family was deeply rooted in the Yuba-Sutter area. She was the granddaughter of Tom Bevan, the long time Yuba County Assessor.

Carol lived most of her life in Marysville attending grammar and high school at Notre Dame. She also graduated from Yuba College. She worked for a number of local companies including the Marysville Clinic Pharmacy. However, the majority of her work life was spent in the employ of Caltrans in Marysville. She started out as a secretary in the Right-of-Way Department and was subsequently promoted to the position of Executive Secretary to the District Director. She completed her service to Caltrans as the Assistant Administrator in the Contracts Department for many years, retiring in 1994.

In her retirement, Carol continued her love of sewing and quilting becoming well regarded in those endeavors and an active member of the Quilters Guild. For many years, she also volunteered at her local elementary school, at the Marysville City Police Department and at the Marysville City Hall.

She enjoyed being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They had many memorable times together over the years.

Carol married Ray "Olie" Nelson in 1946. They divorced in 1980.

They had three children: Robert Nelson (Kathleen Pengelly) of Eugene and Sunriver, OR; Eric Nelson of Salem, OR; and Carolyn "Cici" Herold of Sutter. She also had two grandchildren, Sean Nelson (Tina) of Eugene, Ethan Nelson (Heather) of Eugene, and two stepgrandchildren, Mark Pengelly (Jenn) of Bothell, WA and Blake Pengelly of Las Vegas, NV. Carol also had six great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her younger sister, Jean Brocker of District 10.

Carol was a strong, talented and independent woman who cherished her family and had a great reverence for Marysville and Yuba County.

A private celebration of Carol's life will be held with her family members at a later date. The family wishes that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her name to Sutter North Hospice, 400 Plumas Blvd., Ste. 115, Yuba City, CA 95991.
