Charlene Oakman Obituary

Charlene Oakman, 69, of Yuba City, CA, passed away peacefully in her sleep with her husband Ross and two of her cats by her side on February 23, 2015. She was born on February 10, 1946 to Charles and Jeannette Kilby in Gridley, CA. She grew up in Live Oak. At nineteen, she moved to Oakland, CA and later raised two sons, John and Dean, in Pleasanton, CA. She never missed a high school basketball or baseball game that Dean played.

She was employed at various positions, finally settling in as an administrative assistant in the insurance field for over twenty years.

She loved water-skiing, golf, bowling and travel. In 1995, she met Ross at a bowling center in the Bay Area. Their friendship grew, and they were married in May 1998.

She accepted an early retirement package in 2000 due to complications of Hepatitis C. In 2001, she came home, settling in Yuba City. They joined Plumas Lake Golf Club, and she quickly got involved in the Women's Club. She served on the Women's Club Board in various capacities, but her love was chairing the Invitationals. She hosted several of these fun-filled tournaments, the last one was just this past September. She also organized many reunions and mini reunions with her high school classmates. She always said that growing up in Live Oak and her high school years produced her fondest memories and her deepest friendships.

She was also a Woman of the Moose and a member of PEO. By doing what she loved, she did not allow her illness to define her. She was never someone with cancer and doing all things she did; she was doing all the things she loved, golfing, traveling, entertaining, despite battling cancer. Because of this attitude, she is truly an inspiration to those who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Jeannette Kilby; her brothers Lowell, Ed and Stanley and her stepson John.

She is survived by her husband Ross; her son Dean Vomacka of Durham, N.C. and stepdaughters Cassie Coats of Phoenix, AZ and Jessica Oakman of Napa, CA, as well as nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews and even great-great nieces and nephews in the Chico, Gridley and Houston areas.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Bonnie Stillwell and to Fremont Rideout Hospice, and to all those who continue to offer their love and support.

In lieu of flowers or plants, please contribute to or local animal shelter.

Services will be Friday, March 6, 2015 at 11:00 am at Ullrey Memorial Chapel. Following the service, all are invited to the Yuba City Moose on Walton Ave., Yuba City for food and fellowship.
