Charles Jack Kelly Obituary

Jack Kelly of Yuba City passed away on August 25, 2016. Though he had struggled with his health in recent years he was proud to be living in his home on his own.

Also known as Charlie, CJ and Fireball, Jack was born in Fremont Nebraska on September 14, 1927. He was adopted from Boys Town by Charles and Helen Kelly and spent his youth in Antelope County, Nebraska. Jack began his education in a one room schoolhouse before moving on to Clearwater High School, Norfolk Jr. College and the University of Nebraska where he received a BS in Civil Engineering.

While in Norfolk he met and married Norma Jean Swanson of Newman Grove, Nebraska. The two moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where Norma Jean worked to pay their way while Jack studied. In 1951, following graduation and a short stint with the United States Geological Survey, the two moved to Marysville, California so Jack could take a position with the California Department of Highways where he would eventually spend 41 years. They made their final move to Yuba City in 1985.

Jack was an active member of the Yuba-Sutter community serving as the President of Marysville Little League, as a Trustee of the Marysville Joint Unified School District, as a member of the Yuba County Planning Committee, as a member of Board of Directors of the Christian Assistance Network (CAN) and as the President of Northern Californians for Nebraska. He was a member of Peach Tree Golf and Country Club and of Faith Lutheran Church of Marysville where he attended services regularly.

Jack was a die-hard fan of his Nebraska Cornhuskers as well as the Philadelphia Phillies where his childhood pal Richie Ashburn enjoyed a Hall-of-Fame career. He loved the kids of East Marysville and spent countless hours coaching baseball or just shooting baskets with them in the driveway. His greatest legacy is the sheer number of people who he touched, all of whom describe him as a truly great guy.

Jack was predeceased by Norma Jean and his daughter Sheila Mann but is survived by his daughter Debby Barnes (George) of San Jose, son Scott Kelly (Michelle) of El Dorado Hills and Grandchildren Megan Barnes, Erin, Allison and Christopher Mann and Kendall and Camryn Kelly.

The Kelly family would like to thank all of Jack's friends for their support and love throughout the years. To honor his memory donations can be made in his name to the Salvation Army, the Christian Assistance Network or the Sheila Mann Award for Excellence in Cardiovascular Nursing (www.support.ucsf.edu <http://www.support.ucsf.edu>).

Funeral services for Jack will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 10:30 am at Faith Lutheran Church in Marysville. Send Condolences to: [email protected].
