Charles Porter (Charlie) Becker Obituary

September 23, 1935 - December 9, 2016

Charlie Becker grew up in Marysville, CA, loving sports and the outdoors and enticing others to do the same. In high school he played football, basketball and baseball before moving to Cal Berkeley where he played baseball, held a record for best win-loss pitching percentage and was a member of the 1957 NCAA championship team. He moved to Sacramento and taught at Fern Bacon Jr. High & C.K. McClatchy HS where he was able to instill the love of science and sport in students for more than 35 years. His fondness for bowling was heightened when in 1960 he met Celia, his wife-to-be on a bowling blind date; their love for each other and bowling remained strong until his passing. Charlie was an avid fly fisherman and this passion led him, his family and friends, to experience the great outdoors through camping and fishing adventures in the Pacific Northwest.

Charlie is survived by Celia, his wife of 56 years, his two daughters, Charlene Banard, husband Chris and Carol Herbst, six grandchildren- Jordan Herbst and wife Jordy, Justine Herbst, Brett Banard, Chaz Herbst, Ryan Banard, Colby Herbst, three great-grandchildren Rocky, Ryder and Hazel Herbst and nephew Zeb Becker, wife Jodie, children Xavier and Ella.

Friends are welcome to a celebration of his life on Friday, December 16, 2016 at 2 pm, East Lawn Elk Grove Memorial Park & Mortuary, 9189 E. Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove, CA 95624.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Alzheimer's Aid Society (alzaid.org).
