Just prior to WWII, David moved with his family from Iowa to El Sobrante, California in Contra Costa County where he attended Richmond High School. David started his mechanical engineering career while still a teenager. Working as a Draftsman Apprentice at Otis Elevator Co. in San Francisco and over the next 51 years accumulated a vast acumen of accomplishments in mechanical engineering - road/highway design, water development and distribution system, surveying design, as well as project engineer and Assistant Director of Public Works in Butte/Colusa Counties, California.

In 1970 David moved his family up to "The 49th State" in Anchorage, Alaska where he was Senior Staff Designer and Consultant for multiple reconstruction projects of road/highway/ and railway lines after the devastating 1963 earthquake. After assignments in Anchorage, Valdez and then Juneau, Alaska, David and his bride Elinor moved to Whidbey Islands, Washington in 1980 and decided to retire and enjoy "northwest living". For the next 4 years they enjoyed entertaining friends and family on their 42ft "Slow Boat to China" cruising up and down the Pacific/Canadian Northwest Inland passages.

In 1984 the engineering bug "bit" again and they found themselves back up in Eagle River, Alaska. In 1986 they traveled from one "temperature" extreme to another Phoenix, Arizona and then on to another mild temporate zone- Las Vegas, Nevada where he was Project Manager for the "Spaghetti Bowl" interchange in downtown Las Vegas - The Pinnacle of a very accomplished engineering career.

David and Elinor retired in 1997 to the "quiet life" of rural Spokane, Washington until the rural became too quiet and they moved to be near their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in the Chico, California vicinity.
