Donald (Shortstack) Oliver Obituary

December 12, 1953 - December 28, 2014

Originally from Texas, not much is known about his early years other than the fact the he rode the rails around the country. Several years ago, he got off the train in Marysville and settled here. He organized a group of homeless folks together and worked towards improving themselves. With his assistance and guidance, those that wanted out of the homeless camp was able to get out and move on with their lives.

Since 2012, Shortstack has called the Marysville Historical Cemetery home. Watching over the plots that had seen decades of vandalism, Shortstack did a huge service to his community by living in his trailer, provided by the Marysville Police Department. While there he overlooked the place nearly 24 hours a day. Since having there, vandalism dropped dramatically to none at all. His presence was shown in the love and care he gave to this 14 acre cemetery.

Aside form his work in the cemetery, he was known as a prominent, positive influence in the homeless community in the Yuba-Sutter area. Promoting sobriety and self-sufficiency, he worked hard to give positive influence to his peers. He will be greatly missed by the hundreds who visited the cemetery in the last two years and especially the cemetery volunteers, his family, friends, the Marysville Police Department and his pups; Itty Bitty and Rosie.

Shortstack was a true man of God. Heaven definitely gained an angel. God speed our friend!

The memorial services for Donald (Shortstack) Oliver is scheduled for Saturday January 10 at 10:00 am at Bethel Ame Church, 115 5th St., Marysville, CA.
