Donald Robert Wickum Obituary

Dr. Donald Robert Wickum, DDS (77) of Yuba City, CA, passed away unexpectedly on January 15, 2015, at Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville, CA, as a result of surgical complications. Born December 25, 1937, in San Bernardino, CA. Dr. Wickum graduated from St. Bernadine's High School (1955), San Bernardino Valley College - Associate of Arts (1962) and University of California San Francisco, School of Dentistry - Doctor of Dental Surgery (1966). He served in the US Navy for four years in the Quartermaster Division of the Seventh Fleet aboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in the Pacific (1956-1960). Dr. Wickum opened a private dental practice in Marysville in 1966, where he provided the best service to our community for over 42 years. Instead of retiring, he continued his lifelong passion for dentistry by working in other dental practices from 2008 - present.

Dr. Wickum was also a fishing guide, commercial fisherman and local fishing icon. He was an avid hunter, gardener, diver, golfer, skier and cook. He held many leadership positions in our community, including: Past President of Butte-Sierra Dental Society, Past President of Peach Bowl Anglers, First President of Moose Lodge 1204 Fishing Club, helped found the "Youth Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs" Program, Member of Peach Bowl Golf Club, and Grand Master of Alcoholics Anonymous. Don was always out to help anyone in need. He was very intelligent, passionate, caring and generous.

Survived by his wife, PJ Wickum of Sutter, CA; brother, Thomas G. Wickum (Ann) of Lebanon, OR; children: Thomas J. Wickum (Shannon), Mary Ellen Wickum (Bill Nugent), Ann Wickum Dahlen (Andy), Catherine Wickum, Michael Avalos (Sherrie), Becky Avalos Hoffman (Rob), Steven Avalos, John Avalos (Kitty), Robin Guisti (James); grandchildren: Hunter, Riley and Brady Wickum; Matthew, Nicholas and Marit Dahlen; John, James, Darren, Makynzie and Jordan Avalos; Josh and Justin Evans; Jordan, Alex and Katie Hoffman; Jacob, Coree and Andrew Avalos; Christian and Ally Siller; Christopher, Nick and Lexie Guisti; and ten great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Herman (1904-1995) and Mary Alice (1911-2005); identical twin, Ronald J. Wickum, and daughters Rachel Evans (John) and Stephanie Siller (Jeff).

A memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Bride Church, 655 Colusa Ave., Yuba City, CA 95991.
