Eldon (Al) Howard Staplecamp Obituary


Eldon Howard Staplecamp, 94, passed away peacefully in his Yuba City home on January 6, 2015.

Eldon, also known as Al, was born to Archie Staplecamp and Mildred Engle on May 9, 1920, in Preston, Minnesota. He graduated from Preston High School and attended Luther College on a basketball scholarship. He finished his college degree after retiring from the U.S. Air Force.

Eldon enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 10, 1942 and served with distinction at Tinian in the Mariana Islands where he was assigned to the 313th Bomb Wing and was assigned to the B-29 Superfortress, the Enola Gay.

In 1949, he was discharged, but remained in the Air Force Reserves. Before his recall in 1950, he obtained a Civil Aeronautics Administration Aircraft and Engine License and a private pilot's license. He achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, served two overseas tours in England and one tour in Vietnam. He retired in 1972 after serving 30 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was a proud veteran of three wars; WWII, the Korean and Vietnam War.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed camping with his family. He also loved to travel in their RV with his wife, Jeannette, and other "RV friends" from the Yuba-Sutter area.

Eldon, husband and father of five children, is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jeannette Kathryn Torborg and four of his children; Linda Smith of Scottsdale, AZ, Thomas Staplecamp of Sacramento, CA, Jane Moody of Wetumpka, AL and Michael Staplecamp of Anderson, CA. He was blessed with 8 grandchildren and 3 great -grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Yvonne Durben of Dodge Center, Minnesota.

Services will be held at Ullrey Memorial Chapel in Yuba City, California on Wednesday 14, 2015 at 10 a.m. with a full military honors burial at Sutter Cemetery at 1 p.m.
