Eleanor Dunning Obituary

Eleanor Dunning passed away at the age of 99 on September 20, 2015, at her home.

Eleanor was born June 23, 1916, in the Rio Seco District, 10 miles North of Biggs, CA. She attended grammar school in Nelson, CA where it was necessary for the horse and wagon to swim Clear Creek in the winter on the way to school. She graduated from Durham High School in 1934 and married Albert Dunning in the Nelson Methodist Church on November 27, of that year. In 1935 she and Albert operated Dunning & Dunning Butane Supply Co on 99E South of Gridley. In 1945 they moved North of town to 17 acres of peaches and started Albert Dunning's Appliance featuring Westinghouse and Tappan appliances. In 1969 they opened "Dunning Auto Parlor" car wash and retired in 1972 for trailer traveling with friends.

She was very involved in the community and her church. She loved gardening creating a beautiful yard where many weddings were held. She was a cofounder of The Green Thumb Garden Club in 1982 which continues today. Using flowers from the garden she decorated for weddings and community events. She was always involved as a parent in whatever activities her children participated; school, church, 4-H, Cub Scouts, FFA. By attending American National Red Cross Aquatic School in Lake Of The Woods, OR she became a Certified Red Cross Swim Instructor at the Gridley Swimming Pool. Eleanor and Albert were avid dancers participating in the Green and Gold Ball which performed at the Governors Ball in Sacramento.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Georgia Barnes of Avon, Butte County; her husband, Albert Dunning; her siblings, Irma Mills, Orville, Albert, Elmer, Leslie, Gerald, Forrest Barnes, Genevieve Shackleford; her grandson, Kirk Campbell and many former long time Gridley and Butte County friends.

She is survived by her children Lorry (Beverly) Dunning, Janice (Wilbur) Reil, and Myrna Lee (Warren) Riley. She has 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a Grand Matriarch to all her family. She will be remembered for her righteous example.

A viewing will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Kentucky St., Gridley, from 9:00 am - 10:30 am, October 2, 2015.

Graveside Services at 11:00 am at Gridley-Biggs Cemetery.

Memorial Service at 12:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church followed by a reception at the church.
