Elizabeth Wellman Smith Obituary

Anna Elizabeth Wellman was born March 11, 1923 in Roseville, CA to Amos and Margaret Minderman Wellman, and died July 27, 2016 in Yuba City, CA. Her father was one of triplets born in 1878 at Erle, CA, now part of Beale AFB.

Elizabeth started school in Elverta and moved to Biggs in 1932. She graduated from Biggs High School as valedictorian in 1939, then from Chico State University with a teaching credential in 1943. She attended graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley and taught elementary school in Orland and Red Bluff, CA.

Elizabeth married Hubert "Smitty" Smith in Reno August 14, 1949 and they moved from Red Bluff to Yuba City in 1951.

Elizabeth worked as a teacher's aide at Bridge Street School and as a substitute teacher in Sutter County. She also worked for Blue Shield, the Sutter County Public Library, and the Sutter County Assessor, and retired from the Sutter County Clerk/Recorder's office in 1998 at the age of 75.

Elizabeth volunteered at Christian Assistance Network and taught Laubach Literacy courses. She was a member of the Yuba City United Methodist Church and the Widowed Persons Association of California.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband Hubert "Smitty" Smith; her sister, Inez Wellman Maas; her son Hubert "Bert" Smith; and her grandson Hoyt Smith. She is survived by her children Lloyd Replogle Smith of Hollister, Hugh Smith (Sandi) and Phyllis Smith, both of Yuba City; her grandchildren Astra Smith Surom (Bobby), Metta Smith of Arkansas, Juliet Smith of Missouri, Crystal Replogle of Oakland, Justin Shimer-Replogle (Betsy) of Ventura, Nesha Zumbrum (Scott) of Yuba City; her great-grandchildren Emmaline, Abbey and Heidi Surom, Eden Coursey, Brianna Rhiney, and Luke, Marley and Jade Zumbrum; and great-great grandson Kaeden Basi.

Services will be held on Monday, August 1 at 10:00 A.M. at Gridley-Biggs Cemetery, 2023 Highway 99, Gridley.
