Evelyn Catherine Phillips Obituary

Evelyn Catherine Phillips passed away on October 21, 2015 at Rideout Hospital in Marysville. She was born July 26, 1922 in Los Angeles to Peder and Cathrine Pedersen.

Evelyn moved from Los Angeles to Fresno at age eight where her father established the family farm to support seven children. After graduating from Washington Union High School, she attended business school. During this time, she met and married Henry Phillips. The newlyweds then moved to northern California to operate an apartment house and grocery store in Grass Valley. From there, it was back to Raisin City, California, where they raised turkeys and farmed cotton.

The couple moved to the Yuba-Sutter area in 1952. Evelyn worked for Bank of America, Yuba City Union High School and Caltrans before retiring in 1975 to spend full time with her husband Henry following his disability retirement as a result of a serious automobile accident.

Evelyn was blessed with rare musical talent which included the ability to write songs and play the piano, organ, accordion, guitar, fiddle and base. During her long musical career, she played in many local bands and in later years was very active in the California State Old Time Fiddlers Association. She especially enjoyed traveling with Henry in their motor home to fiddler functions as far away as Weiser, Idaho.

Survivors include her sister Emma Jean Farran of Fresno, son Grant (Diana) Phillips of Yuba City; daughter Pamela (Brian) Hendon of Spanish Springs, Nevada; grandchildren Christopher Phillips, Todd (Samantha) Hendon and Hayley Pedersen and great-grandchildren Abigayle Hendon, Izabella Hendon and Zakory Pedersen. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry "Snapper" Phillips, parents, brothers Harry and Bill, and sisters Betty, Edith and Mary.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at Ullrey Memorial Chapel from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Graveside services will be held at the Sutter Cemetery on Wednesday, October 28, 2015, at 11:00 A.M. followed by lunch and reception at the Harvest Room, 1475 Tharp Rd., Yuba City.
