Gayle was born in Paden, Oklahoma on October 21, 1925. She slipped into the waiting arms of Jesus on May 14, 2015 at Woodland Skilled Nursing Center from complications of dementia. She was a member of Crossroads Community Church, which she loved dearly. Gayle was the only child of Ruby Smalley (Helvey) and Mason Smalley. Her parents divorced when she was very young and her father went on to have a second family.

She traveled through many city and states as a child until her mother decided on San Francisco, CA. Self and they were married on May 22, 1947. They had their daughter Nancy, then moved to Humboldt County where Chris, Ron & George were born. Eventually, they moved their family back to Live Oak (1970) where they continued to live.

She loved to learn new things and later in her life, took classes at Yuba College where she usually earned an A. She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mom and grandma. She was an avid reader of anything non-fiction & religious study and was known for her baking skills.
