Gerald Alexander McGillivray Obituary

Jerry McGillivray died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on August 31, 2017, his 83rd birthday, after a six-year battle with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).

Jerry was born to Rosella and Alex McGillivray in Anacortes, Washington on August 31, 1934. The family moved to Eureka, California in 1949, where Jerry attended and graduated from Eureka High School in 1953. In 1954, Jerry married Patricia Shay, the love of his life, with whom he eventually had four children. In 1967, the family moved to Sutter County, living first in Sutter and finally in Yuba City, California. Jerry and Pat remained in Yuba City until 2015, when they moved to Sacramento, California.

Jerry's career in auto parts spanned most of four decades, and many will remember him as the parts manager for many years at John Behel Motors in Yuba City. In the late 70s and early 80s, he spent several years in Sacramento as a partner and manager at Victory Auto Parts, commuting daily from his home in Yuba City. In later years, he graced the counters at Art Mele Buick, Dow Lewis Motors and Automotion in the Yuba-Sutter area.

Jerry will be remembered as a good man who was caring, trustworthy, generous, loyal and courageous. He was quick to offer a helping hand to those in need. He was a member of St. Isidore's parish and was active in the Dad's Club during his children's school years. Jerry enjoyed a keen interest in waterfowl and was active in the Yuba-Sutter area, building and maintaining wood duck boxes, helping to rebuild and support the local wood duck population. He was also an enthusiastic photographer - especially of landscapes, wild flowers, and nature. In his retirement years, he also enjoyed volunteering for the Gleaners and Christian Assistance Network (CAN). Above all, Jerry cherished his family, taking outsized pride in even the smallest of their accomplishments.

He will be sorely missed by those he leaves behind: Pat, his beloved wife of 63 years; children Jill (Tim) Metzger of Glen Ellen, CA, Don (Gail Dartez) McGillivray of Sacramento, CA, Jerry (Kathy) McGillivray of Fortuna, CA, and Betsy (Bruce) Holt of Langlois, OR; grandchildren Elise McGillivray, Cory, Ian and Kasey Holt; sister Betty Sweet of Napa, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service to be held Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 1:00 pm at St. Mary Cemetery and Funeral Center, 6509 Fruitridge Rd. in Sacramento.

Remembrances may be made to the Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation (www.aamds.org) or UC Davis Hospice (https://give.ucdavis.edu/HSYS/9100824)
