Gerald (Jerry) Matthews Obituary

Gerald (Jerry) Matthews, a Yuba City resident for 70 years, was born on August 10, 1932, Bell, CA and passed away at the age of 83, on August 14, 2015, Rideout Hospital, Marysville, CA.

Jerry was an Engineer with Caltrans for 27 years and Entrepreneur of 4 Restaurants. He was a lifelong member of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints.

His father and mother moved with their 4 children to Yuba City in 1933, and opened The Auction Yard of Yuba City. He went to auctioneer school at the age of 20 in Indiana. He is an alumnus of Lincoln Elementary, Yuba City High School, and he attended Brigham Young University. He had a lifelong love of music. He played the clarinet and saxophone. He was totally devoted to his family and taught his children to have a love of music. He loved and had passion for children, especially babies. He enjoyed making pies and passing them out to family and friends. He never knew a stranger. He is in heaven with his brother Joe and fellow musicians. They are giving Glenn Miller and his Orchestra a run for their money!

Jerry passed away in the presence of his son, Jed, while holding his hand and saying a prayer for his beloved father, and with a soft goodnight "until we meet again" kiss on his forehead.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years Beverly Ann Schmidt Matthews, his children Gerald Jed (Cynthia) of Yuba City, Michael Dean (Tamara) of Coleville, CA, Shelly Ann Matthews Chernicki of Yuba City, and Craig Alan of Port Orchard, WA, 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, brother Ellis Leroy of Paradise, CA, sister Nettie Arlene Matthews Elgar of Farmington, UT, and 27 nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his Father William Henry, mother Nettie Juline Miller Matthews, sisters Anna Louise Matthews Johnson, Cula Matthews Powers, brother Joseph Henry, two brothers-in- law, two nieces, one nephew, and one great niece

Viewing will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at Ullrey Memorial Chapel, 817 Almond Street, Yuba City.

Memorial Service will be held Thursday, August 20, 2015 at 11:00 am at The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 520 Clark Ave., Yuba City. Immediately following lunch for family and friends, same location, after which the Dedication of the Grave at Sutter Cemetery. Arrangement under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel
